Simone Charley returned to the NWSL in August 2026 when Chicago Stars FC acquired the veteran forward for the remainder of the season. The move followed a stint with Newcastle United in England and brought Charley back to a league where she previously played for Portland Thorns FC, Angel City FC and Orlando Pride.
Charley worked her way back to professional soccer after suffering Achilles ruptures in consecutive years. She returned to NWSL action with Orlando in 2025 and scored against the Houston Dash that October, her first league goal in three years. She later joined Newcastle United before returning to the United States and signing with Chicago.
Before turning pro, Charley was a two-sport standout at Vanderbilt. She recorded 25 goals and 18 assists in 76 soccer appearances while also earning six All-American honors in the triple jump. In 2019, she became the first Vanderbilt alumna to play in the NWSL. Vanderbilt later inducted Charley into its Athletics Hall of Fame.
